The BAckstory
Harkened was initially born in Lima, Peru, when high-end knitwear brands struggled to find manufacturers that were able to guarantee volume and quality for complex, hand made pieces. The challenges were manifold: the toughest stitches, the most inconsistent dyeing techniques and finding ways to systematize the work of hundreds of individual hands.
This required tremendous grit and collaboration. From our knitters to our Lima-based team, our work was built on an unrelenting passion to honor the most beautifully complex of knitwear techniques from the very beginning, and it is inherent in all that we do.
As we delivered impeccable quality for our clients’ brands, we saw them grow, and we grew too. What began with just a handful of brands and knitting groups in 2016 later evolved into a full-service private label operation in 2023, supporting 25 brands, 100+ knitting groups and a full time staff of 70, exporting more than 90,000 garments per year.
With lots of practice, we found the sweet spot to make a garment look just about perfect but with its own voice. And while we have unquestionably scaled (and continue to do so), this will always be a human heavy operation, filled with people who love what they do and are determined to get it right every time.
our team
Our office in Lima is the heart of our operations, serving as the meeting place for many moving parts. Our on the ground team covers different areas, including account management, product development, logistics, quality control, planning and production, and of course administration.
The textile tradition in Peru runs deep and the people we bring together are its greatest aficionados. What we do is difficult and not for the faint of heart. While excellence and proactivity are a key part of how we operate, so is humor. We believe effectiveness and enjoyment are not mutually exclusive, and aim to empower each other as a team.
Woman Owned
Founder and CEO Kelly Phenicie lived in Lima from 2006 to 2020, after graduating from NYU. What started as a mission to gain field experience for work in the international development sector, later pivoted into entrepreneurship.
Mesmerized by the incredible skill in Peru and the growing interest for beautifully crafted knitwear among brands (and finding herself squarely in the middle), she resolved to connect the two.
A keen understanding of US culture (and a lot of resilience) allowed Kelly to bridge the gap between brands and Peruvian artisans.
